The betrothed
July 2026 at the WP Theatre. Written by Scarlett Grace McCarthy. Directed by Sarah Conolly. Produced by Literally Broke, Natalie Rine, and Dani Turner.
Featuring Emily Oliveira, Georgia Kate Cohen, Abby Erff, Ennette Fremont, Annapoorva Green, and Caroline Hawthorne. Swing: Megan Quick.
An all-women absurdist comedy that reimagines the classic marriage plot. Set in the 19th century, The Betrothed follows Kitty, whose carefully laid plans to secure a suitable marriage are thrown into disarray when her brother's engagement falls apart. Determined to restore social order and preserve everyone's prospects for a happy ending, Kitty navigates a web of romantic complications, betrayals, and shifting loyalties. Performed by an all-women cast, the play re-examines and queers the conventions of the traditional marriage plot.
"E Morton’s costumes were particularly well-styled. I was very into Conrad’s revealing unbuttoned shirt and Kitty’s Victorian-Lady-by-way-of-80s-Madonna miniskirt and lace stockings."
"...19th-century society is brought to life by a talented all-women cast against a standout backdrop of costumes and stage design."
